My name is Phil Dodson and this is my portfolio

DIY is my Flash-based senior project which allows viewers to put together Rube Goldberg inspired machines.

Artist Statement:
My project is an exploration of Rube Goldberg machines and the way they ultimately fail at performing their tasks. Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist and inventor who became popular by drawing complex devices to complete simple, every-day tasks. The board game Mouse Trap as well as the films Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Edward Scissorhands, Back to the Future, and others contain contraptions that are influenced by Rube Goldberg’s drawings. Being an over-complicator of the highest order, Goldberg’s machines are metaphors for my thought process and lead to the feeling of “Life is a Circus.” Viewers interact with my circus by choosing tasks to be accomplished. Once finished, machines build machines to complete the chosen tasks. The visual theme for my project is a combination of the mechanical and a circus performance and is set on a stage for the world to see.
